Can Skincare Be Sustainable
Share
Let's talk about sustainability and skincare. At Jenny Nordic Skincare, we're all about embracing a holistic approach to beautiful skin, and preserving the environment and sustainability are crucial parts of that journey, although it can sometimes feel impossible. Can skincare be sustainable?
Let's explore what makes skincare sustainable and how you can navigate the market to make the best choices for your skin and the environment.
Mindful Ingredient Selection
When it comes to sustainable skincare, it all starts with the ingredients. We often think about sustainability through the packaging - which is important too, but limiting, if we forget about the other aspects of it.
Think of your skincare products as a bouquet of flowers – the quality of each bloom matters. Ingredients that are organically grown, are environmentally friendly as the farming process respects the landscape and diversity. There are organisations such as Soil Association that certify both ingredients and products making it easier for the consumer to find organic products. These certifications can be costly and smaller brands can't necessarily afford certification.
Sometimes artificially made ingredient is more sustainable and has lower impact on the nature. They are called nature-identical ingredients as they are identical to the ingredient sourced from the nature, but man-made. One of these ingredients is niacinamide which you can find in our Beauty Essence.
Some ingredients may be by-products of food production - such as the squalane we use in our Oil Serum.
One of the principals I followed when formulating the products was that all ingredients in every product has been selected carefully and that the products don't' include any ingredients that are not needed in the formula.
Sustainable Packaging
Sustainable skincare goes beyond what's inside the bottle. Minimalist and eco-friendly packaging materials are contributing to a cleaner planet. Opt for products that use recyclable, biodegradable, or refillable containers. By doing so, you'll reduce your carbon footprint and waste.
Jenny Nordic uses bottles that are manufactured in Europe to reduce our carbon footprint and all our boxes and marketing materials are made of recycled and recyclable materials.
Longevity and Effectiveness
Sustainability also means products that last. Choose skincare items that are effective over the long term, reducing the need for frequent replacements. This not only saves you money but also reduces the overall demand for packaging and resources.
Choose products that last for a long time but that are also multitasking. This way you can reduce the number of skincare products you buy. The fewer products you use the more sustainable your skincare routine becomes. Read more about how to build your minimal skincare routine here.
Educate Yourself
Navigating the market for sustainable skincare can be challenging, but education is your ally. Take the time to research brands, read reviews, and stay informed about eco-friendly practices. Contact brands and ask questions - this is the only way to get your answer and also to let the brand know their customers care about sustainability.
Support Sustainable Brands
One of the most impactful ways to promote sustainability in the beauty industry is to support brands that are genuinely committed to the cause. Look for those that transparently communicate their sustainability efforts, from ingredient sourcing to packaging. You can always contact the brands to find out more.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Minimise waste by using products sparingly, repurpose containers when possible, and recycle empty packaging appropriately.
When it comes to sustainability, less is more. A minimal skincare routine focuses on using only the essential products, reducing both waste and complexity in your daily regimen.
By streamlining your skincare routine and opting for products with minimal ingredients and eco-conscious packaging, you not only simplify your life but also reduce your environmental footprint. Plus, using fewer products often means less waste and a smaller carbon footprint.
Remember, the key to a minimal skincare routine is to focus on quality over quantity. Each product should serve a specific purpose and align with your skin's needs. By adopting this approach, you can achieve radiant, healthy skin while supporting sustainability in the beauty industry.
Can skincare be sustainable?
In conclusion, sustainable beauty and skincare are not just trends; they're essential for a holistic approach to beautiful, healthy skin. By selecting products with mindful ingredient choices, eco-friendly packaging, and cruelty-free practices, you can make a positive impact on both your skin and the environment. Stay informed, support sustainable brands, and remember that every small choice you make can contribute to a more sustainable future.
Offsetting carbon footprint or planting trees is one way to compensate the negative environmental impact a brand has. We offset our carbon emissions on all our products through Switch2Zero who not only plant trees but support global development projects that help the nature but also the communities. Our every shipping is also carbon neutral.
