Why Your Face Massage Might Be More Important Than Another Serum

Why Your Face Massage Might Be More Important Than Another Serum

What if the next step towards healthier-looking skin isn't another product, but a few minutes of face massage?

We're constantly being told that the answer to our skin concerns lies in another bottle. A new serum for fine lines, an eye cream for tired-looking eyes or another exfoliant to bring back our glow. And as we move through our 40s and beyond, when hormonal changes can affect our skin in new and sometimes frustrating ways, it's easy to feel that we need to do more.

But while good skincare absolutely has its place, I think we've become a little too focused on what we put on our faces and not focused enough on how we care for them.

Your skin doesn't always need more products

As we age, our skin naturally changes. Collagen production declines, skin can become drier, and hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause and menopause may contribute to sensitivity, breakouts and changes in texture. You might notice that your skin looks less plump than it used to, or that your jawline and facial contours are gradually changing.

It's tempting to respond by adding more active ingredients and making our skincare routines increasingly complicated. Sometimes, though, the best approach is to simplify. Your skin needs gentle cleansing, moisturisation and daily sun protection, alongside targeted ingredients when appropriate. But you don't necessarily need a new product every time you notice a change.

This is where face massage can become a valuable addition to your routine. Not as a replacement for effective skincare, and certainly not as a miracle solution to ageing, but as another way to care for your skin and yourself.

What can face massage actually do?

One of the immediate benefits of facial massage is that it can stimulate local blood flow, giving your complexion a temporary, healthy-looking flush. Gentle massage may also help reduce the appearance of facial puffiness by encouraging fluid movement through the lymphatic system. This is particularly appealing if you often wake up with a puffy face or feel that your features look tired.

Facial massage can also help you become more aware of the tension you carry in your face. Think about how often you furrow your brows while concentrating, clench your jaw when you're stressed or hold tension around your temples without even realising it. Gentle massage can feel soothing and help you relax these areas.

Although research into the long-term effects of facial massage is still limited, its value isn't only about how your skin looks afterwards. Taking a few minutes to slow down, breathe and reconnect with yourself can be beneficial in its own right.

And let's not forget that skincare should be enjoyable. Applying your facial oil or moisturiser with slow, deliberate movements can turn an everyday routine into a moment of self-care rather than another task on your to-do list.

What about fine lines and sagging?

I am going to be honest here. Facial massage cannot permanently lift facial tissues, replace lost collagen or restore the volume that naturally changes as we age. Despite what some beauty marketing suggests, there isn't strong scientific evidence that facial massage alone can significantly reduce wrinkles or create a lasting facelift effect.

However, it can temporarily improve the appearance of puffiness, help you feel more relaxed and give you a lovely opportunity to care for your skin.

For me, that's reason enough to include it in a holistic skincare routine. We don't have to promise dramatic transformations to recognise the value of a treatment that helps us feel refreshed and cared for.

Perhaps we could also rethink our expectations of skincare. Instead of constantly asking how we can look ten years younger, what if we focused on keeping our skin healthy, comfortable and well cared for as it changes?

You don't need an expensive tool to get started

Facial gua sha is one of my favourite ways to incorporate massage into a skincare routine. Using a smooth-edged tool with gentle, controlled movements can make facial massage feel relaxing and intentional. It may also help temporarily reduce puffiness when performed appropriately.

However, you don't need a beautiful stone tool or a complicated sequence of techniques to get started. Your hands are perfectly capable of giving you a soothing facial massage.

Try spending five minutes in the evening massaging your forehead, cheeks and jaw with a little facial oil or moisturiser to provide enough slip. Keep your movements gentle, avoid dragging the skin and pay attention to areas where you tend to hold tension. If your skin is inflamed, irritated or particularly sensitive, adapt your approach or wait until it has settled.

The aim isn't to force your face into a different shape. It's to give your skin some attention while allowing yourself a moment to slow down.

Skincare is about more than what you put on your face

One of the things I love most about holistic facials is that the experience goes beyond the products applied to your skin. There's the opportunity to lie down, let someone else take care of you and switch off from the endless mental to-do list for a while.

For many women in their 40s and beyond, life is already full of responsibilities. We're managing work, family and changing bodies while being constantly reminded by the beauty industry that we should be doing more to maintain our appearance.

What if looking after yourself didn't always mean adding another step to your routine? What if it meant taking five minutes to slow down, or booking a facial because you want to feel relaxed and cared for, rather than because you think something needs fixing?

Your skincare products still matter, and effective ingredients have an important role to play. But face massage offers something different: a chance to reconnect with yourself while supporting your skin in a gentle, enjoyable way.

So, before you buy another serum, consider whether your routine could benefit from a little less complexity and a little more touch.

Because your skin deserves care, not constant correction. And so do you.
