Is A Moisturiser Really Necessary?

I gave up using a moisturiser 8 years ago. Quitting moisturisers completely changed my skin. One of the biggest myths in the skincare industry is that you need a moisturiser for your skin and I constantly get questions about why I don't have a moisturiser in my range. Let's talk about what moisturiser is and why it is not necessary in your skincare routine.

What is a moisturiser?

A moisturiser, fundamentally, is a skincare product crafted to hydrate and nourish the skin. Its composition typically encompasses a blend of water, oils, and other active and functional ingredients. To mix and keep the water and oil phase a moisturiser always has an emulsifier, often a blend of emulsifiers to increase stability. A moisturiser might also have ingredients that enhance the skin feel of the product, a preservative and other stabilising ingredients. A moisturiser is a blend of water and oil - hydration and moisture.

What does the skin need from skincare?

First and foremost, it's crucial to understand that our skin craves both moisture and hydration. While these terms are often used interchangeably, they address different aspects of skincare. Hydration refers to the water content in our skin, ensuring it remains plump and supple. On the other hand, moisture is equivalent to oil and involves sealing in that hydration to prevent water loss.

Now, here's the catch – while traditional moisturisers have been a go-to solution for many, they might not be the ultimate answer to achieving the radiant skin you desire. For your skin to be able to absorb the hydration and moisture (and other benefits your product promises) moisturiser is not the most efficient way to do that.

Layering your skincare increases the product absorption and hydration and moisture levels in the skin. Layering hydration (water) first and moisture (oil) second has proven to be more beneficial for the skin.

Oils lock in hydration and moisture, and their effectiveness can be heightened when combined with a strategic approach to layering skincare.

Is a moisturiser necessary?

The skin is a complex organ, and a one-size-fits-all solution simply won't cut it. I am all about minimal skincare routines, but using only a moisturiser is unlikely to be able to care for your skin.

Instead of relying solely on moisturisers, consider adopting a layered skincare routine. This method involves applying products in a specific order, allowing each to address unique concerns and work synergistically for optimal results. Try layering an essence or mist and following up with face oil.

Skincare routine without a moisturiser

Start your routine with a gentle cleanser to remove impurities and create a clean canvas for subsequent products. Follow this with a hydrating essence to replenish hydration levels and prepare your skin to absorb the goodness that follows. You can apply 1 to 3 layers of the essence on your skin depending how dry and dehydrated your skin is.

A high-performing and multitasking essence can substitute both face mist and serum. So you can simplify your skincare routine even further.

Now, let's talk about the game-changer – facial oils. Contrary to popular belief, face oils can be a blessing for all skin types. They provide an additional layer of nourishment, helping to seal in hydration and fortify the skin's natural barrier. Opt for a blend of organic oils rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids for an added boost.

In essence, the layered approach maximizes the efficacy of each product, ensuring that your skin receives a tailored treatment at every step. It's a holistic strategy that harmonizes science and nature, reflecting the ethos of Jenny Nordic Skincare.

So, is moisturiser necessary? Moisturising your skin is necessary, but using a moisturiser is not. You can achieve better results in your skincare by layering your skincare and skipping the moisturiser. Try the technique for your hands too!

Here's to radiant skin and the journey of self-love!
