How to get rid of hyperpigmentation?

If you have patches of darker pigmentation on your skin, it might be hyperpigmentation. It is very common, although not wanted skin condition. It is very hard to completely get rid of hyperpigmentation, but there certainly are things you can do about it!

What is hyperpigmentation?

Before we jump into the solutions, let's get a grasp on what hyperpigmentation is and why it happens. Hyperpigmentation occurs when certain areas of your skin produce more melanin than usual, resulting in darker patches or spots. It can be caused by various factors and can affect all the skin types.

Sun Exposure: Those sunny days at the beach might feel amazing, but they can lead to hyperpigmentation down the road. The UV rays trigger your skin to produce excess melanin as a defence mechanism. The pigmentation can appear, for example, just above your upper lip or on the forehead. This type of hyperpigmentation is called chloasma.

Hormonal Changes: It's well-known that fluctuating hormones can trigger hyperpigmentation. Pregnancy, birth control, and even your monthly cycle can lead to hormonal fluctuations that trigger hyperpigmentation.

Post-Inflammatory Marks: Sometimes pimples and spots leave a mark behind. That's called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Even a minor injury or irritation can cause this.

3 ways to reduce and prevent hyperpigmentation

Don't skip SPF

Hyperpigmentation is notoriously hard to treat. The best thing to do is to try to prevent it as much as possible.

Sunscreen isn't just for the beach days; it's a daily essential. UV rays are one of the main instigators of hyperpigmentation. Make sure your sunscreen is broad-spectrum and has at least SPF 30. Apply it generously every morning, even on cloudy days. And don't forget to reapply throughout the day, especially if you're out and about.

Harness the Power of Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a game-changer when it comes to hyperpigmentation. This antioxidant not only fights free radicals but also helps reduce the appearance of dark spots. Look for skincare products with stable vitamin C derivatives and incorporate them into your daily routine. Serums or creams containing vitamin C can work wonders over time.

Glow & Revitalize Oil Serum is formulated with rosehip seed oil that's packed with vitamin C to help even the skin tone.

Exfoliate Gently

Exfoliation can help against hyperpigmentation. It encourages faster skin cell turnover, revealing a more even complexion beneath. Opt for gentle exfoliants that won't irritate or damage the skin barrier. Gently acidic toner and essences can help fade hyperpigmentation gradually without over-irritating your skin.

Rehydrate & Balance Beauty Essence is mildly acidic with lactic acid and is designed for daily use to help maintain plump, even skin.
