Do I Need to Change My Skincare Routine for Spring?
Share
As winter fades and spring arrives, our skin goes through changes too. Just like we swap heavy coats for lighter layers, our skincare routine needs a little refresh to stay in tune with the season. I am a big fan of consistency, minimalism and sustainability - that's why I never advise you to completely change your products.
I've put together five easy steps to switch up your skincare routine this spring.

The Shift in Weather = A Shift in Your Skin
Spring means more humidity, fluctuating temperatures, and increased sun exposure—all of which affect how your skin behaves. You may notice it feels less dry but more prone to breakouts or sensitivity.
As the air becomes warmer and holds more moisture, your skin naturally produces more oil to adjust to the environment. This shift can be beneficial if your skin is dry during winter, but it also means that excess sebum, combined with lingering dead skin cells from colder months, can clog pores more easily—leading to breakouts.
Fluctuating temperatures, especially the contrast between chilly mornings and warmer afternoons, can put stress on the skin barrier. When your skin is constantly adapting to temperature shifts, it may become more reactive, leading to sensitivity, redness, or even flare-ups of conditions like rosacea or eczema.
Additionally, increased sun exposure can trigger changes in your skin’s oil production and moisture levels. UV rays weaken the skin barrier and can cause inflammation, making it more susceptible to dehydration, sun-induced sensitivity, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots that linger after a breakout). If you’ve been using stronger actives like retinoids or exfoliating acids over winter, your skin might also be more vulnerable to irritation from the sun.
Together, these factors make spring a time when your skin feels like it’s in transition—less dry than winter, but more prone to oiliness, congestion, and sensitivity. Adjusting your routine to support barrier health, hydration, and gentle exfoliation can help your skin stay balanced as it adapts to the season.
Spring Skin in 4 Easy Swaps
1. Lighten Up Your Skincare Routine
If winter called for rich, heavy creams, spring is about keeping things breathable. Swap thick moisturisers for lightweight hydration (like Rehydrate & Balance Beauty Essence), and if you love face oils, go for a few drops instead of layering too much. Glow & Revitalize Oil Serum is a lovely, award-winning face oil that's lightweight and perfect for spring skin.
2. Increase Your SPF Game
Spring sunshine can be deceiving—it might not feel as intense, but UV exposure is increasing. If you’ve been slacking on sunscreen during winter, now’s the time to be consistent. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF to protect your skin from early ageing.
3. Exfoliate Wisely
After months of cold weather, dead skin cells build up, leading to dullness. A gentle exfoliation routine (using fruit enzymes or mild acids) can help brighten your complexion and allow better absorption of your skincare products.
4. Support Your Skin’s Detox Process
Seasonal changes can trigger puffiness, breakouts, or congestion. This is where gua sha and facial massage come in—helping to promote lymphatic drainage, reduce stagnation, and keep your skin clear and glowing.
