A lifting and relaxing gua sha routine

Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, gua sha massage technique involves using a smooth-edged tool to gently scrape the skin, providing a range of benefits, including lifting and relaxing the facial muscles. What is gua sha

Gua sha, which translates to "scraping away the illness" in Chinese, has been practised for centuries to improve circulation, reduce muscle tension, and promote overall well-being. Traditionally, it was performed on the body, but in recent years, it has gained attention for its beauty-enhancing facial effects.

Gua Sha tools are typically made from jade, rose quartz, or other smooth stones. The curved edges and gentle pressure applied during the massage stimulate blood flow, release fascia adhesions, and promote lymphatic drainage. This, in turn, helps to reduce puffiness, minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and contour the face for a lifted and toned look.

Lifting and Relaxing Gua Sha Routine

Step 1: Prepare your skin 

Start by thoroughly cleansing your face and applying a nourishing facial oil or serum. This will allow the Gua Sha tool to glide smoothly across your skin, maximising its effectiveness.

Step 2: Begin with the neck 

Before moving to the face, focus on the neck area. Hold the Gua Sha tool flat against your skin and gently scrape from the base of your neck upwards towards your jawline. Repeat this motion 5-10 times on each side to help release tension and stimulate lymphatic drainage.

Step 3: Sculpt the jawline 

Using the curved edge of the Gua Sha tool, start at the chin and sweep upwards along the jawline towards the earlobe. Apply gentle pressure and repeat this motion 5-10 times on each side. This technique helps to define and sculpt the jawline while promoting relaxation.

Step 4: Lift the cheeks 

Place the Gua Sha tool at the corner of your mouth with the same curved edge and sweep it gently along the cheekbone towards the ear. Repeat this motion 5-10 times on each side. This technique lifts the cheeks, enhances their contour, and boosts circulation to give your face a natural glow.

Step 6: Focus on the under-eye area 

Flip the Gua Sha tool over to use the smaller curved end. Gently sweep from the inner corner of the eye towards the temples, following the contour of the under-eye area. Repeat this motion 5-10 times on each side. This technique aids in reducing puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines, leaving your eyes looking refreshed and rejuvenated.

Step 5: Smooth the forehead 

Using the flat side of the Gua Sha tool, start from the centre of your forehead and sweep outwards towards the hairline. Repeat this motion 5-10 times. This technique helps to release tension in the forehead muscles, minimise the appearance of forehead lines, and promote relaxation.

Step 6: Flush the lymph

After focusing on the under-eye area, it's time to flush the lymphatic system. Lymphatic drainage plays a vital role in detoxifying the body and reducing facial puffiness. Using the flat side of the Gua Sha tool, start at the centre of your forehead and gently sweep downward towards your temples and then down the sides of your face, following the natural flow of lymphatic pathways. Repeat this motion 5-10 times. This technique helps to stimulate lymphatic circulation, allowing toxins and excess fluid to drain away, resulting in a healthier and more vibrant complexion.
