I was honoured to interview Chloe Manlay from The True Skin Nutrition over on Instagram. Chloe is a specialist in holistic approach to skin health and adult acne. She’s sharing her wisdom on the connection between nutrition and skin and how you can balance changing and fluctuating hormones.
The connection between nutrition and skin
Jenny: Welcome to today's interview, where we delve into the intriguing world of skincare and nutrition. I'm thrilled to have Chloe, a seasoned nutritional therapist and skin expert, with us today. Chloe, could you please introduce yourself to our audience?
Chloe: Hi, I'm Chloe, and I have been a nutritional therapist for over 10 years. I practice under a functional medicine model and am also a yoga teacher. My focus has shifted over the years from various areas, but now I specialize in women's health and skin conditions like adult acne, rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis. I'm really passionate about sharing information to help people who might feel lost when it comes to their skin, as I've personally experienced skin challenges throughout different phases of my life.
J: That's fantastic, Chloe. It's evident that your journey has led you to become an expert in this field. Let's dive right into the topic. Could you explain the connection between nutrition and our skin's health? How does what we eat reflect on our skin
Chloe: Nutrition plays a crucial role in our overall health, and our skin is no exception. Our diet provides the essential nutrients that fuel our bodies, including our skin. As the largest organ and our body's first line of defence, the skin can reflect internal imbalances. A whole foods diet, rich in various colourful fruits, vegetables, quality proteins, and healthy fats, can promote radiant and healthy skin.
Healthy fats and skin
J: That makes a lot of sense. A well-rounded diet seems to be the foundation for good skin health. Speaking of fats, you mentioned their impact on the skin. Can you elaborate more on how incorporating healthy fats can benefit our skin?
Chloe: Absolutely! Healthy fats, like those found in oily fish, have anti-inflammatory properties that can benefit the skin. They support the skin's barrier function and help reduce inflammation, making them particularly helpful for various skin conditions.
J: I experienced this firsthand when I had dry skin, and incorporating more healthy fats into my diet led to a significant improvement in my skin's health.

Skin, nutrition and hormones
J: It's fascinating how such dietary changes can make a tangible difference. Let's shift our focus to women's health. As we age, hormonal changes, especially during perimenopause, can impact our skin. How can nutrition help in balancing hormones and supporting skin health during this phase of life?
Chloe: Supporting the natural shift in hormones during perimenopause is crucial for overall well-being and skin health. Managing inflammation and stabilising blood sugar levels can be achieved through dietary adjustments. Opting for quality protein with every meal, adapting intermitent fasting, and reducing stimulant intake can help support hormonal health and promote healthy skin.
J: That's valuable advice for women experiencing these changes. Chloe, you specialise in helping clients with skin conditions like acne. Can you walk us through your approach when working with clients facing such challenges?
Chloe: Of course! When working with clients, I focus on a holistic approach that addresses detoxification, immune system support, and hormonal balance. These three elements are interconnected and play a significant role in skin health. Personalised testing helps me understand each client's unique circumstances, enabling me to tailor my approach to their specific needs.
J: That sounds comprehensive and individualised. For someone just starting to explore the connection between their diet and skin health, what signs should they look for, and how can they begin to make those connections?
Chloe: A great starting point is to become curious about their skin's behaviour and note any changes. Keeping track of skin conditions in relation to menstrual cycles, for women, can be enlightening. Identifying patterns might reveal triggers for skin issues, helping individuals make targeted dietary adjustments.
J: That's a practical approach to self-awareness. Moving on, you mentioned the significance of gut health in skin conditions. Can you explain how the gut influences our skin and why it's essential to focus on gut health?
Chloe: The gut and skin have a strong connection, often referred to as the gut-skin axis. Even without digestive symptoms, the microbiome can play a significant role in skin health. Improving gut health through proper nutrition enhances nutrient absorption, positively impacting the skin's condition and overall health.
Work with Chloe
J: It's fascinating to see how interconnected our body systems are. Chloe, your insights have been incredibly valuable. Before we conclude, could you tell our audience how they can access your expertise and programs?
Chloe: I offer two programs to support those seeking healthier skin through nutrition. The "True Skin Method" is a consultation with a self-paced course that provides recorded materials, educational videos, handouts, and guides to establish a strong nutritional foundation for healthy skin. For a more personalised approach, the "True Skin Transformation" program spans 4 to 6 months, including one-on-one support and personalised testing to address specific skin concerns.
J: That's wonderful, Chloe. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us today. Your passion for helping others achieve healthier skin through nutrition is evident, and I'm sure our audience will find your insights truly beneficial.
Chloe: Thank you for having me. It's been a pleasure to discuss the vital connection between nutrition and skin health. I hope that this information will empower individuals to take charge of their skin's well-being through the power of nutrition.
